Employee professional development and coaching is vital to improve performance, enhance staff commitment and loyalty, as well as decrease levels of stress and tension in the workplace. The Harvard Business Review reports, “The goal of coaching is the goal of good management: to make the most of an organization’s valuable resources.”

In 2017, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) and Affiliates contracted with Rick Olson to work with our team to enhance their leadership and coaching skills. Rick has worked with credit unions and leagues for the past 15 years. He has authored two STAR modules, is a past host of America’s Credit Union Conference, and is the instructor for CUNA’s World Class Service Executive Institute. Rick has worked with scores of organizations helping them develop healthy work cultures focused on effective sales and world class service. He is also the founder of the “Coaching College,” which is designed to give managers and emerging leaders the tools needed to help their employees excel in a sales and service environment. You can find out more about Rick at http://www.rickolson.com/.

Our work with Rick hatched the idea of holding a similar Coaching College at the chapter level, which we piloted this past year working with the Mobile Chapter with very positive reviews from both attendees and CEOs. I am pleased to announce it’s our intent to expand this localized training this year to the Southernmost, Broward, and Birmingham (AL) Chapters.

The Coaching College would begin in March 2019 with sessions held locally once per quarter. The program allows for 16-19 credit union employees to enroll in each class. The attendees will take part in the following:

  1. Training sessions on the following themes:
  • The Role of a Coach
  • Coaching your employees through times of change
  • Coaching for sales and service excellence
  • Coaching the challenging employee
  1. Reading four outstanding leadership books.
  2. Receiving an 8-page, 360-evalution report.
  3. Participating in four one-on-one coaching sessions with Rick

Four byproducts that Rick consistently sees when managers are involved in the Coaching College include:

  • Employees are empowered
  • There is a higher level of employee engagement
  • Leaders are developed
  • Talent is retained

In Mobile, this program also resulted in stronger connections among employees from the different credit unions that participated. We hope this will positively impact the chapter moving forward, creating greater awareness and engagement.

The cost for this year-long session is $2,000 per attendee. Additionally, Small Asset Size CUs can utilize their LSCU $500 SAS CU Voucher, lowering the cost to $1,500. The tentative dates for the Southernmost Chapter Coaching College are:

  • March 18-19
  • May 20-21
  • July 15-16
  • October 28-29

Space for the program is limited and is expected to fill quickly, based on our experience in Mobile and interest among chapter CEOs we have spoken with. Please confirm your credit union’s participation by contacting Kate Brady at  Kate.Brady@lscu.coop or 866-231-0545, Extension 1060.

In the meantime, if you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me or Rick Olson directly at 612-270-6082. We look forward to working with the chapter on this exciting new leadership development opportunity for our member credit unions!
